The 25-Foot Rule

Lead in the topsoil

Homes built before 1978 often used lead-based exterior paint. Over decades it flaked and leached into the surrounding dirt — which is why experts say keep edible gardens 25 ft or more from an old foundation.

The Homegrown fix: Our boxes are filled with fresh, clean, lead-free soil. What is in the ground below simply does not touch your food.

Moisture & Structure

Foundation damage

Beds planted against the house keep soil constantly wet and shaded. That moisture causes foundation heave, cracks, mildew on siding, and wood rot — so experts leave 12–24 in of airflow and set shrubs 3–5 ft off the walls.
